In south-west Scotland, Castle Douglas is surrounded by the unspoilt beauty of the Galloway countryside. The town is an ideal base from which explore the region or indulge in the many activities available - a mini Scotland.

Golf, as always, is high on the agenda and there are more than 30 courses across the region, including the championship links at Southerness and Powfoot. With so many courses in the surrounding area, there is something suitable for golfers of all skill levels and experience. There are some excellent parkland courses, plus a variety of testing 9-hole courses.

Nearby Dalbeattie Forest is the site of one of the internationally renowned 7stanes mountain bike trails. The trail is famous for The Slab, a challenging steep granite rock, which will challenge even the most serious mountain bikers.

The region is also great for bird watchers, with the Red Kite trail within easy reach. Walkers are spoilt for choice. The Merrick and the Screel are just 2 of the popular hikes nearby.

For those interested in history, there is nearby Threave, famous for its castle. If fishing is your pastime, then try one of the major salmon rivers in the region, such as the Cree or the Nith. There are plenty of burns, rivers and lochs stocked with rainbow trout in the surrounding area. Offshore, the sea angler has a great variety of fish, thanks to the warming effect of the Gulf Stream at Solway Firth. The area’s beaches also benefit from this warming effect. The beaches are some of the finest in Scotland and many of them are easily accessible from the hotel. Alternatively, you could try water skiing, windsurfing or sailing on picturesque Loch Ken.
