Hellissandur is a part of Ólafsvík, a fishing town on the western end of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. The town is just north of the Snæfellsjökull National Park, which has some spectacular volcanic rock formations, long sandy beaches and caves. The park is ideal for a challenging walk or hike, and is also great for observing wildlife or bird watching. The area can also be explored by car, by bicycle or on horseback.

The fishing villages along this part of the coast provide a fascinating glimpse of Iceland??™s seafaring history. At Gufuskálar there are shacks where, in the past, fish were dried for export. Tours of the Hellissandur freezing plant provide an insight into modern Iceland??™s key industry.

Both Ólafsvík and Hellissandur have maritime museums. The museum at Hellissandur is located in a reconstruction of an old seaman??™s shack, as was used for centuries in this region.

There are many fascinating places of interest within easy reach of the hotel. Extinct volcanoes can be seen in Rauðhóll, Saxhólar, Öndverdarneshólar and Purkhólar. Caves can be found in the lava fields at Eyvindarhólar, Brugghellir, Sönghellir at Arnarstapi, and at Saxhóll and Purkhólar.

Places of beauty along the shore include Skarðsvík, Keflavíkurbjarg, Djúpalónssandur and Dritvík. Djúpalónssandur is an easy walk from the road, while Dritvík is another 15 minutes??™ walk away, along the coast.

There are various boat trips available in the area, from sightseeing cruises to whale watching.

The area??™s many lakes and rivers are ideal for angling and the coastline has many spots suitable for sea angling.

Ólafsvík has an indoor swimming pool, while the nearest open-air pool is at Stykkishólmur. There is a naturally spring-fed spa pool at Lýsuhóll.

The church at Ingjaldshóll is believed to be the oldest concrete church in the world that is still in its original form. It was built in 1903 and is a listed building.
