The hotel is thought to have been built in 1492 as a guest house for the Bishop of Lincoln`s Palace, however, many of the timbers in the hall are thought to be much older. The unique 5-spoke ceiling has a carved central boss showing the Lamb & Papal pennant with the words `Ecce Agnus Dei`, meaning `Behold the Lamb of God`. There have been many alterations over the years including a Georgian wing to the south and the original overhang above the ground floor was filled in with bay windows in Victorian times. The present bar was once the village butchers shop. It is also thought that the hotel has a resident ghost, ‘The Lady in Grey’. She is said to have been seen and smelt by many; it is said that when she is around there is a smell of lavender.
