The Star Alfriston ***Reputed to be one of the country`s oldest inns, The Star Alfriston offers a unique blend of oak beams, open fires, an intimate atmosphere and traditional hospitality alongside the modern comforts of its well appointed guest accommodation. Originally built in the 13th century and known as `The Star of Bethlehem` until at least 1520, the hotel was then run by the monks of Battle Abbey who offered shelter to friars and pilgrims on their way to the shrine of St Richard at Chichester. It is ideally located for walking the South Down`s Way, visiting Glyndebourne, Eastbourne, vibrant Brighton or for taking the Newhaven-Dieppe ferry. With The South Downs Way passing right by the front door, and a wealth of other short and long walks all around, The Star is an ideal base for a walking holiday. If walking is a little too energetic for your liking, then why not visit one of the local seaside resorts. Brighton and Eastbourne are both just a short drive away. If you prefer to just trip around in the car, then the drive from Seaford Head via the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head to Eastbourne offers magnificent views of the South Downs and out towards the English Channel. For the sports enthusiast, there are a number of excellent golf courses nearby at Seaford Head and Blatchington, as well as regular race meetings at both Brighton and Plumpton. There is also the historic LTA International Ladies Tennis Tournament each year in Eastbourne. The world famous Glyndebourne opera season is an annual festival from May to August.
